Collection of Children's Toys and Games

The Collection was established in 2013 and contains porcelain, lead, metal, paper, plush, wooden, textile and plastic objects made in various parts of the world from the 19th century to the present day. The occasion for the collection toys was the museum project World of Toys which started in 2012 and the exhibition A Toy Has a Heart created in collaboration with Croatian Radio Sljeme, and a significant number of toys were also collected in the new museum project and the exhibition of the same name Toys - Childhood Forever in 2021/2022. In addition to the existing toys, the largest number of toys arrived at the Museum as donations from citizens, prompted by the aforementioned exhibitions. The Collection contains mostly toys, and to a lesser extent children's board games. It also contains mechanical toys, children's picture books, paper dolls, cars, doll clothes, as well as furniture, various children's board games made of stone and wooden blocks, and others. One of the important segments are toys created in Croatia during the industrialization (Factories Biserka Zagreb, Jugoplastika Split, Tik-Tik Krapina, 25. maj Labin, Marčanka Pula, Lio Osijek). The collection is constantly developing, and recent toys are also being collected. It has been replenished by planned acquisitions and donations from citizens. Attention is paid to diversity regarding the type of objects, materials and production techniques. It is not represented in the Museum’s permanent exhibition, but a part of it is planned for a future permanent exhibition. The Collection is available upon request, and in 2016 the Museum published a bilingual catalogue resulting from years of scientific research and processing of the objects. The publication contains 324 pages and over 700 color photographs of museum objects, documents, and children with toys, and is available to everyone at the museum's gift shop.
